Entry 49 – Doors, Door Hinges, Door Hinge Shims, Door Check Arms, Door Lock Striker

Doors and Hinges

Today I removed the doors and door hinges from the car. A few of the phillips head hinge bolts required heating for removal but I eventually got them all! I began with the LH rear door and moved from there to the right rear, then the right front followed by the left front. The hinges themselves mount to the car and are not adjustable for fitting; however, the hinge mounts to the doors are all adjustable.

Rear Doors

At each door I first removed the clevis pin and cotter securing the check arm to the door. I first loosened and then removed the three hex head countersunk 1/2” bolts through the lower hinges to the doors. I then removed the four 1” phillips head screws securing the upper hinge to the door. The door could then be lifted away from the car. The LH rear door had two shims while the right door had three.

The rear door hinges were removed by loosening and removing two phillips head 1/2” bolts through the hinge to the B/C post, and one from the front door side of the B/C post. Three screws altogether.

After removing the clevis pin for the check arm, I loosened and then removed the three hex head countersunk 1/2” bolts through the lower hinges into the door. The I removed the three hex head countersunk 1/2” bolts through the upper hinges into the door. The doors could then be lifted away.

Removal of the upper and lower hinges from the car required loosening and removing one hex head 1/2” bolt and lock washer through the back of the hinge curve on each hinge, and then two phillips head 1/2” bolts from the “A” pillar for each hinge.

Door Lock Strikers

I had forgotten to remove the RH Rear door lock striker, so I loosened and removed the three chrome phillips head screws from the rear shut face and then removed the striker and its shim from the body.
